Patrick P. Devine

Practice Focus
Patrick Devine is an experienced trial attorney who focuses his practice in the areas of commercial litigation, professional liability defense and insurance defense. Mr. Devine’s commercial litigation practice has focused on the areas of surety and fidelity law, while his professional liability practice has centered on the defense of physician and attorney malpractice claims.

In the realm of insurance defense, Mr. Devine has defended cases arising out of construction issues, fire losses, hotel losses, theater losses, premises accidents, transportation subjects and other serious accidents.

Mr. Devine has assisted many insurance clients, including Acuity Insurance, CNA, CUNA Mutual Insurance Company, Federal Insurance Company, XL Insurance, First Group, Hanover Insurance, Medical Protective, Washington International Insurance Company, Safeco, American States, Boat US and others. He has also represented the State of Indiana and other government entities and non-profit corporations.

Mr. Devine’s reported decisions include Breeden v. Hoffmeister-Repp, 2010 WL 4925629 (Ind. App. 2010).
Professional Background
Mr. Devine joined Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP in August 2005. Previously, he was a trial attorney with Eberhard & Gastineau, P.C., where he was recruited to open the firm's Mishawaka, Indiana, office in 2004. He was also a trial attorney for four years with the Law Offices of Citizens Insurance, where he was responsible for high exposure/excess cases, and was the recipient of their Citizens/Allmerica Exceptional Performance Award in 2001. During his tenure at Citizens’ Mishawaka, Indiana office, Mr. Devine had responsibility for supervising the office, including managing staff and mentoring junior attorneys.

He is a member of the Lake County (Indiana) Bar Association. Mr. Devine often serves as a Lake County judge pro tempore.
Publications and Presentations
In 2002, Mr. Devine was invited by the National Business Institute to lecture fellow attorneys on the topic of “Personal Injury Settlements in Indiana: Practical Methods for Perfecting the Settlement of a Claim.” He has also lectured to students at Michiana Business College on the role of the paralegal in staff counsel. His presentations include "Legal Ethics for Everyday Practice," for National Business Institute, in Merrillville, Indiana, November 2011.

Community Service Activities
Mr. Devine is the senior advisor to the Anna C. Gamble Charitable Foundation, a private charitable trust. He is involved in assisting the trust with selecting recipients for charitable gifts. He also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for Forest Ridge Academy, a private primary school in Northwest Indiana.
