Leslie Richards-Yellen Quoted in Article Authored by Wendy Wen Yun Chang on New Model Anti-Discrimination Rule 8.4(g)

August 25, 2016

Leslie Richards-Yellen, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, was quoted in the article, "A new model anti-discrimination rule," authored by Hinshaw partner Wendy Wen Yun Chang, a member of the Lawyers for the Profession® group. The article was published by The Daily Journal on August 19, 2016.

In the article, Ms. Chang discusses the approval of Model Rule 8.4(g), making discrimination and harassment a black letter ethical violation under the Model Rules of Professional Conduct and what this change means to lawyers as the Model Rules are not self-executing and must be adopted by each state. Ms. Chang reminds us that "lawyers are officers of the court, and the right to a privilege." She further points out that California is currently rewriting its own Rules of Professional Conduct, for which the first set of proposed rules are out for public comment.

Ms. Richards-Yellen, president of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL), emphasizes the significance of the model rule stating, "The National Association of Women Lawyers is very proud to be one of many national bar associations that supported the adoption of the Rule. NAWL strongly supports the next step in the process, which is the effort to ensure that each state has an anti-harassment and discrimination rule in place which is as protective as the ABA Rule. We hope that the spirit of collaboration which presided over the ABA effort to make the legal profession more inclusive and just guides the efforts at the state level."
