Matthew O'Hara Quoted in Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Article on Ex-Guantanamo Detainees
Chicago — Matthew J. O'Hara, a Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP partner, was quoted in a August 14, 2011 Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty article titled "Activists, Lawyers Urge Tajiks to Release Ex-Guantanamo Detainees."
The article discusses Tajikistan's anniversary of independence and how up to 8,000 prisoners are to be freed for the occasion. Human rights groups are asking the president to release two ex-Guantanamo detainees who were sentenced to 17 years in prison following their release from Guantanamo.
Mr. O'Hara was interviewed because he represents another Guantanamo detainee from Tajikistan, and has played a role in investigating the treatment in Tajikistan of these two former Guantanamo detainees. Mr. O'Hara mentions that "they had set out seeking work in 2001 and were fooled and deceived into thinking they were joining Tajikistan's national army." The article discusses an international effort to procure their release from prison in Tajikistan.
