April 7, 2011

Chicago — Matthew J. O'Hara, a Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP partner was quoted in an April 7, 2011 New York Times article titled "Chicago Lawyers Caught Between Clients and Country."

The article discusses obstacles that several attorneys from Chicago encounter when trying to represent their clients who are imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay. The lawyers share their experiences in the article, and detail hoops they have had to jump through and some personal reflections on their experiences as lawyers for men locked up there.

Mr. O'Hara recounts the doubts that his clients had about lawyers being able to help them and says, "It shows the limits of your profession when you ultimately confess to clients that things you said to them — that they should believe in American justice and courts — are wrong."
