Kevin J. Burke (Partner, Chicago office) is an experienced trial lawyer with a practice focused on medical, commercial and governmental civil rights litigation matters. He has tried cases to verdict involving obstetrical, brain-damaged baby, wrongful death, breast cancer and complex surgical matters, construction accidents, and injunctive relief in business litigation. He is certified as a mediator of medical legal disputes through Loyola University Law School Health Law Center. He has served as a mediator in complex medical legal disputes, and has made presentations and commented in legal periodicals on the topic. Mr. Burke is active in firm management and has been a member of Hinshaw’s Management Committee since 2003. He was re-elected to the Executive Committee after completing a three-year term on June 1.
Charles F. Helsten (Partner, Rockford office) has a substantial environmental law practice. He counsels business entities of all sizes on environmental regulation, helping them audit their compliance and consulting with them on environmental policy in their ongoing operations. He also represents business clients in contested environmental matters, defending their interests in government compliance and enforcement actions, helping them secure necessary permits and approvals, and handling private contractual disputes over such issues as environmental indemnity/hold harmless clauses. Mr. Helsten serves as Special States Attorney for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Matters for Will County, Randolph County and Perry County, Ill. He is also Special Counsel to the City of Rochelle and the City of Freeport on matters pertaining to their municipal landfills. In addition, he holds the position of Special Assistant Attorney General on Environmental Matters with the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.
Hal R. Lieberman (Partner, New York office) is the partner-in-charge of the firm’s New York office. He is an experienced trial lawyer who concentrates his practice on the representation of lawyers and law firms in matters related to legal ethics, professional discipline, malpractice, disqualification motions, sanctions and law firm disputes. For nearly 20 years, Mr. Lieberman has focused his practice on lawyers’ professional liability and ethics matters, and has helped shape the law governing lawyer liability. Prior to representing lawyers and law firms in private practice, he served for more than 13 years as Principal Trial Attorney and Chief Counsel to the Departmental Disciplinary Committee of the New York Supreme Court, First Department. He also taught legal ethics at Brooklyn Law School for 13 years. Mr. Lieberman is an active member of various organizations.
Renee J. Mortimer (Partner, Schererville, Indiana, office) is the partner-in-charge of Hinshaw’s Indiana office. She has a broad defense litigation practice with particular focus in the area of trucking and heavy vehicle litigation, and is co-chair of Hinshaw’s Transportation specialty group. Her other areas of defense litigation include medical malpractice, general liability, products liability, municipal liability and ERISA benefits litigation. She appears regularly in state and federal courts in Indiana and Illinois, and has tried multiple cases to verdict in both states. Ms. Mortimer is a leader in both the Indiana and Illinois communities, and an active member of professional organizations in both states.
David R. Mylrea (Partner, Minneapolis office) has extensive experience in complex commercial finance transactions involving offerings of debt and equity, leases, loans and project financing. He handles all facets of complex, multimillion-dollar financings, including origination, negotiation and preparation of definitive documentation, closing and funding. He concentrates his practice in the area of representing banks, investment banks and specialty financial service companies in connection with secured financing transactions with emphasis in real estate and the gaming industry. Mr. Mylrea also represents highly compensated individuals in connection with various business matters, including organization and capitalization of new business ventures. Mr. Mylrea is the Director of Hinshaw’s Minnesota Region and the partner-in-charge of the Minneapolis office. He also is an active member of several state and national professional organizations.
Joshua G. Vincent (Partner, Chicago office) is a trial and appellate lawyer whose litigation practice includes an emphasis on professional liability, hospital and managed care liability, contract disputes, employment discrimination, products liability, and premises liability. He tries cases before juries, judges and administrative bodies, and has a national appellate practice. Mr. Vincent serves as chairman of Hinshaw’s Attorney Training and Education Committee, which conducts intensive clinical and pro bono programs for the firm’s associates, including Hinshaw University. He was re-elected to the Executive Committee after completing a three-year term on June 1.
Hinshaw is governed nationally by a Management Committee, comprised of seven capital partners, who set the strategic direction of the firm and make all key decisions relating to the governance of the partnership. The firm’s Chairman, Donald Mrozek, runs the day-to-day operations of the firm with the assistance of the Managing Partner, J. William Roberts, and the Executive Managing Director, Paul Boken. Each office is managed by a partner-in-charge, who reports to the Management Committee.
Hinshaw’s 25-member Executive Committee approves partner compensation decisions and nominations of firm members in consideration for election to partnership. On decisions that require a vote of the partnership (including partnership elections), the Management Committee will make proposals first to the Executive Committee for its review and consideration before bringing these to the partnership for a vote.
