Lawrence R. Moelmann
Lawrence Moelmann devotes a substantial portion of his practice to handling surety bond claims, fidelity bond claims, probate bond claims and public official bond claims. He also represents contractors, developers, owners and lenders in construction and real estate disputes.
In addition, he represents financial institutions in litigation involving loan transactions and defaults. Finally, Mr. Moelmann has handled a wide variety of complex commercial litigation claims.
Mr. Moelmann served as Vice Chair of the Fidelity and Surety Committee of the American Bar Association for 10 years. He has previously served as Chair of the Fidelity and Surety Committee of the International Association of Defense Counsel, and Chair of the Fidelity and Surety Committee of the Defense Research Institute. He is also a member of the National Bond Claims Association, the Surety Claims Institute and the Chicago Surety Claims Association.
He has been recognized by his peers as a Leading Lawyer in the categories of Insurance / Insurance Coverage / Reinsurance Law and Commercial Litigation. In 2009, Mr. Moelmann was named to the Super Lawyers list in the area of Business Litigation by Illinois Super Lawyers magazine. In 2010 he was included in the area of Construction/Surety Law. In addition, Mr. Moelmann holds the AV® Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell, its highest rating for ethics and legal ability.
Mr. Moelmann joined Hinshaw in 1973. He is a past co-leader of the firm's Real Estate & Construction Group and has previously served on the firm's Executive Committee.
Mr. Moelmann is the co-editor of the Law of Performance Bonds, and a contributor to the Wisconsin section of Payment Bond Manual, Third Edition, both published by the American Bar Association. He has published numerous articles in national journals on topics involving surety law, fidelity bond claims and construction defaults.
He has also lectured on numerous topics to national audiences at seminars sponsored by the American Bar Association, the International Association of Defense Counsel, the Defense Research Institute, the National Association of Independent Sureties, the Chicago Surety Claims Association and the Surety Claims Institute. Mr. Moelmann was a co-chair of “The Law of Performance Bonds: A New Look at Today’s Issues,” a program sponsored by the Fidelity & Surety Law Committee of the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) of the American Bar Association in May 2009. He also presented “Pursuing Claims Against Design Professionals and Other Third Parties” as part of the program.
Mr. Moelmann is involved in a wide range of community activities. He has been trustee for Lincoln College, Lincoln, Illinois, since 1980, and currently serves as Treasurer of the Board. He has also served as a director of the Lake Geneva Country Club, and is currently the Treasurer of the Board.
