Hinshaw Announces New Partners

Based in Hinshaw’s Milwaukee office, Noah D. Fiedler focuses his practice in commercial, general liability and real estate litigation; insurance coverage disputes; and municipal land use, planning and regulatory issues. He also defends professionals accused of negligence. Mr. Fiedler is a former chief executive officer of a trade association and has been elected and appointed to several public positions. He is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Litigation and Real Estate Sections and an active member of the Defense Research Institute’s Commercial Litigation and Professional Liability Committees. Mr. Fiedler earned his J.D. in 1995 from the University of Wisconsin Law School, and his B.S. with high distinction in 1992 from Ambassador University.

Based in Hinshaw’s Chicago office, Scott M. Gilbert advises management-side clients in a wide array of labor and employment law matters, including those involving defamation and breach of contract claims arising from employment circumstances, employment discrimination, traditional labor disputes, and wage and hour issues. He also regularly reviews and analyzes employee handbooks and personnel policies, and provides harassment and discrimination training. Mr. Gilbert is a member of the American Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association. Mr. Gilbert earned his J.D. cum laude from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 2004 and graduated cum laude with a B.A. from Wittenberg University in 2001.

Based in Hinshaw’s Jacksonville, Florida, office, Keith S. Howell focuses his practice in the areas of commercial litigation, general liability defense and workers’ compensation defense. As a former assistant states attorney, he is experienced in managing a large caseload and in handling all aspects of trial practice, including trials before both a jury and the bench. Mr. Howell also has eight years of experience in law enforcement, during which time he worked as a patrol officer, tactical officer and undercover narcotics detective. Mr. Howell earned his J.D. in 2003 from Florida Coastal School of Law, an M.S. in Public Administration from Troy State University in 1999, and a B.S. from Florida State University in 1993.

Based in Hinshaw’s Los Angeles office, Amy K. Jensen, focuses her practice in the area of labor and employment law. She handles matters involving discrimination, harassment, disability and retaliation claims, defending claims in both state and federal courts, and before state and federal governmental agencies. Ms. Jensen also counsels and advises employers in making employment and risk management decisions, and assists her clients develop and implement processes consistent with their business objectives and applicable labor laws. Additionally, she handles class action litigation involving diverse wage and hour claims, business and commercial disputes and other complex litigation matters, including appellate matters. Her clients include employers in both the public and private sectors. Ms. Jensen is a member of the board of directors of the Women’s Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. She earned her J.D. in 2003 from the John Marshall Law School, an M.B.A. that same year from Dominican University, and her B.A. from the University of Washington in 2000.

Based in Hinshaw’s Minneapolis office, Heather L. Marx represents a variety of business clients, including corporations, individuals, and banks in complex business matters and commercial litigation. She handles cases involving business liquidation distribution; commercial and private loans; contractual enforcements; insurance claims; lease obligations; receivership appointments; and real estate transactions. In 2008 and again in 2009, Minnesota Law & Politics magazine named Ms. Marx to its Rising Stars list. Ms. Marx earned her J.D. in 2002 from Georgetown University Law Center, and her B.A., summa cum laude, from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1999.

Based in Hinshaw’s New York City office, Concepcion A. Montoya focuses her practice in the areas of consumer litigation, legal malpractice defense and employment litigation. She also represents clients in commercial and insurance litigation. She also has significant trial experience in the federal courts. Ms. Montoya is a Barrister of the Federal Bar Council American Inn of Court and a member of the Litigation Committee of the Asian American Bar Association. In 2004, she received the “Municipal Affairs Award” for outstanding achievement from the Municipal Affairs Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. She earned her J.D. in 2000 from Brooklyn Law School, and her B.A. from New York University in 1990. She also received a M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in 1995. Ms. Montoya is fluent in Tagalog.

Based in Hinshaw’s Chicago office, Thomas L. O’Carroll focuses his practice in complex civil litigation involving medical malpractice, products liability and toxic torts. He has substantial experience in counseling and representing clients in litigation involving commercial litigation matters, wrongful death and serious personal injury claims. In addition to Illinois, Mr. O’Carroll has represented clients in state and federal courts in Iowa, Kentucky, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He has also argued cases before the Illinois Supreme Court, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Mr. O’Carroll is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association. He earned his J.D. in 1997 from DePaul University College of Law, and his B.A. from Tulane University in 1994.

Based in Hinshaw’s Chicago and Milwaukee offices, Carlos A. Ortiz focuses his practice in the areas of commercial, complex bodily injury-related, consumer, employment, insurance coverage, professional liability and class action litigation. He also counsels employers on risk management and compliance issues, provides business counseling and has handled incorporation and general contract matters. Mr. Ortiz is a past president (2009 - 2010) of the Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association, and a member of the Defense Research Institute and the Association of Credit and Collection Professionals. In 2009, he was selected by the Wisconsin Law Journal as an “Up and Coming Lawyer” for that year. Mr. Ortiz earned his J.D. in 2004 from the University of Wisconsin Law School, and his B.A., summa cum laude, from Northern Illinois University in 2001. He speaks Spanish fluently.

Based in Hinshaw’s Chicago office, Justin M. Penn focuses his practice in litigation with particular emphasis on professional liability defense, including legal malpractice matters and consumer litigation such as class actions for claims under the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act. He also assists employers with labor and employment litigation and arbitrations, and has experience in complex litigation defending hospitals, corporations and religious organizations. Mr. Penn earned his J.D. cum laude, from The John Marshall Law School in 2004, and his B.A., cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame in 1999.

Based in Hinshaw’s Los Angeles office, David H. Ro devotes his practice to the defense of workers’ compensation claims for self-insured employers and insurance companies. He is skilled in all aspects of workers’ compensation litigation, including Section 132(a) and serious and willful claims. Mr. Ro’s clients include large companies, insurers, and governmental entities. He is a member of the Korean American Bar Association. Mr. Ro earned his J.D. from the UCLA School of Law in 2000, and his B.A., cum laude, from the University of California, Irvine, in 1997. Mr. Ro is conversant in Korean.

Based in Hinshaw’s Boston and Providence offices, Ranen S. Schechner concentrates his litigation practice in professional liability matters, with an emphasis on representing attorneys, architects and engineers. He also represents insurance carriers, lenders and sureties, and has coverage experience for claims made and commercial insurance policies. Mr. Schechner also has a Certificate in Environmental and Land Use Law and has handled environmental matters. In 2008 and again in 2009, Mr. Schechner was named to the Rising Stars list in the area of Professional Liability: Defense by New England Super Lawyers & Rising Stars magazine. Mr. Schechner is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Rhode Island Bar Association. He earned his J.D. from Boston College Law School in 2002, and his B.A. cum laude, from Brandeis University in 1999.

Based in Hinshaw’s Chicago office, Diane E. Webster focuses her litigation practice on professional liability defense, with particular emphasis on the defense of medical professionals and hospitals in malpractice claims. She also practices in the areas of products liability, pharmaceutical liability, premises liability and municipal law. Ms. Webster’s clients have included a major league baseball organization, hospitals and insurance companies. Ms. Webster is a member of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois and the Hispanic National Bar Association. Ms. Webster earned her J.D. from New England School of Law, graduating cum laude in 2004. She received her B.A. in 2001 from Arizona State University. Ms. Webster is proficient in Spanish.
