January 26, 2011
MIAMI, Fla. Barbara Fernandez, a Partner in the Miami office of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, has been appointed to a second term as president of the Dade County Defense Bar Association (DCDBA). Ms. Fernandez has served as president of the organization since 2009.

The Dade County Defense Bar Association (DCDBA) has been serving civil defense attorneys in the Miami area since it was founded in 1965. The association provides CLE seminars, judicial receptions and networking opportunities for attorneys who practice primarily in the fields of insurance, personal injury, and commercial defense litigation. Its bi-monthly CLE luncheons feature presentations by attorneys, prominent judges, and expert witnesses from the community.

During Ms. Fernandez’s first term as President of the DCDBA, she organized bi-monthly continuing legal education (CLE) luncheons featuring presentations by prominent state, federal and appellate judges. During the holiday season, Ms. Fernandez and the DCDBA’s board raised hundreds of dollars for needy families in the community. This year, she plans to continue the DCDBA’s tradition of providing informative and entertaining CLE luncheons for the defense bar, as well as exceed its past fundraising efforts for the community.

Ms. Fernandez focuses her litigation practice in the areas of consumer litigation and class actions. She has extensive experience in defending clients in individual and class action claims involving the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA), Florida Consumer Collection Protection Act, Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Her clients include lending institutions, debt collection agencies, debt buyers and lawyers. Ms. Fernandez also handles Magnusson-Moss warranty claims and Florida Lemon Law matters. In addition, she has experience in handling actions involving vicarious liability for rental and leasing companies, catastrophic personal injuries, motor vehicle accidents, construction site accidents, defamation and civil theft.
