General Changes to Privacy Practices
Wednesday, July 31, 2013 from Noon to 1:00 p.m. CDT

When is a patient's authorization required to use his or her protected health information (PHI) for marketing purposes?  The Omnibus Final Rule changed the answer to this question, expanding the definition of marketing to include certain treatment and health care operations communications. The sale, use or disclosure of PHI for marketing purposes is also one of several topics that must now be addressed in a covered entity's Notice of Privacy Practices (NPP). The Final Rule mandates other significant changes to NPPs, and how updated versions are to be distributed. The presenters will explain these new requirements and how to comply.

Business Associate Agreements and Business Associate Requirements
Wednesday, August 7, 2013 from Noon to 1:00 p.m. CDT

The Omnibus Final Rule brought significant changes to previous definitions and requirements for business associates and covered entities subject to HIPAA's privacy and security rules. The presenters will focus on the new expanded definition of who is a “business associate,” the new duties and liabilities for business associates and their subcontractors under the Final Rule, and specific actions covered entities and business associates should take to achieve compliance.

Presenters: Lora L. Zimmer.

Breach, Breach Notification, and Changes in Enforcement Activities
Wednesday, August 14, 2013 from Noon to 1:00 p.m. CDT

With the impending compliance date of September 23, 2013, for the HIPAA Final Rule fast approaching, it is important that health care providers and business associates have a clear understanding of the breach notification requirements and the HIPAA Privacy and Security Enforcement Provisions. The presenters will discuss the revised breach notification rules, including the four factors to consider when undertaking a risk analysis to determine the probability of a breach.
