Rory Mattson focuses his practice in commercial and business litigation. Formerly an assistant attorney general for the state of Minnesota, he has handled litigation involving environmental law, land-use issues and real estate transactions. He also has significant appellate experience, having briefed and argued more than 15 cases before the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Professional Background

Prior to joining Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, Mr. Mattson was for three years an assistant attorney general in the office of the Minnesota attorney general. There, he served first in the public safety division and later in the natural resources division.

During law school, Mr. Mattson clerked in the law department of a national retailer, and was an extern to the Honorable Bruce A. Peterson, Fourth Judicial District (Hennepin County District Court), Minnesota. His law school accomplishments include having participated in the American Bar Association's (ABA's) Negotiations Competition Team and the Maynard Pirsig Honors Tournament. He also was a nominee to the ABA's National Moot Court Team.


Mr. Mattson plays basketball, soccer and golf in various leagues throughout the Twin Cities metro area. When winter arrives in Minnesota, Mr. Mattson enjoys Nordic and Telemark skiing.
